
What Actually Happens to Infrared Heaters in a Bathroom?
Let’s be honest: bathrooms are a nightmare for electronics. Think about it. One minute the lamp is ice cold, and the next, it’s blasting heat in a room thick with steam. It’s a brutal cycle. If the seal has a tiny flaw or the housing starts to wear down, the lamp just dies. We don’t like guessing games when it comes to how long these things last. That’s why we put them through “damp-heat” tests—basically, we push them until they break so we know exactly where the limit is.
The Battle Against Humidity
Water vapor is basically the natural enemy of quartz glass and electrical parts. In a steamy bathroom, moisture finds every little micro-crack it can. Once that dampness hits the tungsten filament, things go south fast. The wire thins out, hot spots form, and before you know it, the bulb burns out way sooner than it should. To stop this, we lock our lamps in chambers with 85% humidity and crank up the heat. It forces the moisture to try and sneak through the seals much faster than it would in your house. If a lamp can’t handle 500 hours of that torture without losing power? It doesn’t make the cut.
The “Swing” and the Seal
It’s not just the wetness that kills these lamps. It’s the temperature swing. Imagine going from 20°C to 600°C and back again, over and over. That constant expanding and shrinking can wiggle the bond between the glass and the metal caps loose. And once that seal opens up, the steam walks right in. We keep a close eye on “creep”—that slow shifting of materials. We look for any weird discoloration in the quartz or tiny pits on the connectors. If you’re installing these in a busy gym or a high-end hotel, you can’t have a technician climbing a ladder to replace bulbs every few weeks. It’s just not feasible.
Finding the Sweet Spot
Here’s the tricky part: you can’t just seal everything airtight. If you make the seal too tight, you might trap gases inside or mess with how the tube expands when it gets hot. It’s a balancing act. We want it waterproof, but we also need it to breathe. Just keep in mind that while the unit is built to handle the moisture, your actual fixture needs the right ventilation. If the housing can’t vent, it’ll overheat, and no amount of fancy sealing can fix that.
