
Keeping Your Class 100 Cleanroom Actually Clean (While Heating Wafers)
When you’re working in a Class 100 environment, you’re fighting a war against dust. One tiny flake of material and your whole batch is toast. Here’s the tricky part: when you heat wafers, the danger isn’t just the temperature. It’s the lamp itself. Standard glass can break down or “off-gas” when it gets hot, dumping impurities right onto your work. That’s why we stick to high-purity synthetic quartz. No metallic junk, no surprises.
The “Goldilocks” Distance
You can’t just shove an infrared lamp right up against a wafer. If you do, you’ll get these nasty hot spots that warp the silicon. Worse, if they actually touch? Game over. Instant contamination. Finding the right gap is a bit of a balancing act. If you move the lamp closer, the heat is intense, but it’s not even. If you move it back to get a nice, uniform temperature across a 300mm wafer, you might be tempted to just crank up the wattage. Be careful there. Push the wattage too hard and you’ll fry the ends of the lamp.
Why We Use Fused Quartz
We’ve stripped everything away—no coatings, no glues, nothing that could flake off or smoke when things get hot. We use a fused quartz envelope because it can handle being heated and cooled over and over without cracking. We also use specialized electrodes so the seal doesn’t just burn out on you. The best part? The quartz is so pure that the short-wave IR radiation just slides right through. It doesn’t get trapped in the tube wall. This means more energy hits the wafer and the lamp itself stays cooler.
The Trade-offs (The “Gotchas”)
Now, here is the catch: high-purity quartz is brittle. It loves the heat, but it hates being shaken. If your mounting brackets let the lamp vibrate against a metal holder, it’ll score the surface. Once that happens, the lamp is on a fast track to failure. Make sure your brackets are dialed in. And don’t forget your cooling system—it needs to be beefy enough to handle all that radiant heat bouncing back off the wafer stage.
